Hft
Hft is a national charity that supports adults with learning disabilities.
Hft is calling on the next Prime Minister to reinstate the position of Minister of State for Social Care, in his or her next Cabinet, as a matter of urgency.
The social care sector is in crisis, with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) recently acknowledging that the sector is at a “financial tipping point”. Since 2008, social care had been the portfolio of a Minister of State but in July 2016, Theresa May reshuffled her cabinet and social care was allocated to a more junior Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State. Hft believes that this action has meant that the portfolio of social care has been ‘demoted’ at a time when it needs to be higher up the government agenda.
In our manifesto, we highlight that a Minister of State would be:
- able to develop a holistic view of the social care sector and would have the seniority to implement real change in government policy.
- in a unique position to understand the impact of developing policy and legislation in other departments on such a critical and financially vulnerable sector.
- a single point of contact for external stakeholders to engage with government on issues of policy.
