National Institute for Health Research announces largest ever investment into dementia research
Dementia research will receive £45 million over the next five years as part of a record £816 million investment in NHS research, the Health Secretary announced today.
Twenty NHS and University partnerships across England have each been awarded funding, through the National Institute for Health Research.
Each of the twenty Biomedical Research Centres will host the development of new, ground-breaking treatments, diagnostics, prevention and care for patients.
Dr Doug Brown, Director of Research and Development at Alzheimer’s Society, said:
“This boost in funding for dementia research will allow vital collaboration between researchers and clinicians, helping to drive innovation in dementia health and social care. With no new treatments for dementia in over a decade, we welcome this additional focus from the National Institute for Health Research.
“Today’s commitment increases the total pledge we’ve seen from UK government and charities to support research into dementia, including our own commitment to spend £150m over the next decade. Together, these investments offer hope for a better future for the one million people expected to be living with dementia in the UK by 2021.”
