Premier accolades for world leaders in health, safety and environmental management
British Safety Council presents Sword and Globe Awards to best performers in health, safety and environmental management
The British Safety Council presented the prestigious Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour Awards for the exemplary management of health, safety and environmental risks to businesses from around the world at an awards ceremony, held on Friday 30 November at Banking Hall in the City of London. The winning organisations came from a wide range of industry sectors in the UK, mainland Europe, India and the Middle East, including construction, education and training, energy generation, food and drink, leisure, logistics, manufacturing, retail and transport.
The 61 Sword of Honour and 13 Globe of Honour winners have demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel a proven track record of excellence in managing risks to workers’ health and safety and/or to the environment from the organisations’ activities.
Opening the awards ceremony, Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “The Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards recognise and reward the organisations that have reached the pinnacle of health and safety, or environmental management, or both in the case of a very small number of companies.
“The Sword or Globe of Honour is such a significant achievement because it also requires an organisation to demonstrate how they intend to continually improve in specific aspects of health, safety and environmental management. Moreover, exemplars in the management of health and safety don’t look at health and safety in isolation. They increasingly recognise that health and safety is an integral part of health and wellbeing. Professor Dame Carol Black articulated the importance of the link between health and safety when she said: ‘You can’t be a safe worker if you’re not a healthy worker’.”
Lawrence Waterman, Chairman of the British Safety Council, said: “Today’s ceremony in the iconic Banking Hall at the heart of the City of London is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the success of the Sword and Globe award winners who have set an example of excellence in the management of health, safety and environmental risk worldwide, further strengthening the case for good health and safety at work.
“We should remember, however, that the management of health and safety is not only about accident prevention. For a company to be truly successful and for its employees to be engaged, committed and happy, it must create conditions where people are able to thrive at work. This is the true meaning of wellbeing and it’s our industry’s goal for the future.”
The British Safety Council paid particular tribute to nine organisations that won the double (i.e. both the Sword of Honour and the Globe of Honour). They were: Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) UAE, Qatargas Operating Company Limited – Commercial and Shipping Group, Mount Anvil Ltd – Royal Docks West, Mount Anvil Ltd – Kampus Project, MACE International Technology – CLN Ireland, MACE International Technology – AMS Amsterdam, BAE Systems Naval Ships, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).
