Response to Government announcement on investigating officers post-retirement

Police Federation of England and Wales

Responding to the Government's announcement that it would introduce a new amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill to let the period after retirement in which officer misconduct could be investigated be extended "in exceptional circumstances", Steve White, chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said:

“It is of serious concern to us that the Government feels the need to make a further amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill in relation to misconduct proceedings against retired officers.

“The devil will no doubt be in the detail and I look forward to being involved in discussions with government partners about this amendment, and will be interested to know what considerations will be in place to determine what constitutes an ‘exceptional circumstance'."
