Three quarters of over 50s want ‘English votes for English laws’
On the eve of a controversial vote by MPs on English votes for English laws (EVEL), a poll of more than 10,000 over 50s indicates that three quarters support the principle.
However, far from indicating that this is a very ‘English’ opinion, six out of ten of those living in Scotland (62%) and Wales (58%) also supported a change so that Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish MPs would be excluded from voting in Westminster on issues which have been devolved to their respective parliament or assemblies.

“It is clear that many people support the United Kingdom, but also believe in fairness and equity. Many find it simply impossible to understand how an MP could continue to vote on an issue that will have no impact on constituents, but could have enormous implications for those living elsewhere in the UK.”
