Alzheimer's Society responds to the Government's £750 million charity package

It's good to see the Government acknowledge the critical role charities play in providing essential services across the UK and supporting vulnerable people, like the 850,000 living with dementia.

Kate Lee, Chief Executive Officer at Alzheimer’s Society said:

“It's good to see the Government acknowledge the critical role charities play in providing essential services across the UK and supporting vulnerable people, like the 850,000 living with dementia. However, this £750 million package is a drop in the ocean. In reality it will provide some relief, to some charities, while the sector stands to lose £4bn of funding for their vital services in the next 12 weeks.

“We are keen to understand how this will make a difference to the thousands of vulnerable people with dementia that our Alzheimer's Society frontline staff are hearing from.  People like the 97 year old man living alone with dementia who’s been trying to survive on cereal as he can't cook. Our Dementia Adviser was made aware, got him a food parcel and ensured he is getting fed. Charity teams are delivering life or death support. 

“Charities like Alzheimer's Society are needing to deliver more for people in crisis than ever before at a time when our funding is so hard hit.  Every penny we receive, whether from the government or from the public, is crucial to ensure people living with dementia, and those that care for them, are properly supported to get through this challenging and frightening time.”
