Helen Sunderland, Health and Social Care Lead at EY, comments on today’s Budget:
“Despite local authorities dealing with huge funding and delivery pressures, the silence on adult and children’s social care was deafening.
“According to the Local Government Association (LGA), adult social care has seen a real term cut of 7% between 2009 and 2017 and is predicted to face a £2.5bn pound gap in 2020. In addition, a decrease in EU workers, unpaid carers and providers handing back unsustainable contracts will add further pressure.
“We again saw no mention on children’s social care despite an estimated £2bn funding gap, reductions in early help services and council leaders feeling unable to meet statutory duties. With less ability to intervene early, we may see a cycle of escalating needs and costs.
“Despite calls from local government, no funding relief has been granted. The sector must continue its journey of reform and innovation – using local partners, new and innovative providers and networks to find more ways to deliver more with less.
