Chancellor increases his green credentials with consultation into plastic waste - EY

1 min read

Chris Sanger, EY’s Global Head of Tax Policy, comments on the consultation on plastic waste:

“The Chancellor increased his green credentials by calling for evidence on using the tax system to address single-use plastic waste. He professed to be more focussed on changing behaviour than raising revenue, and backed this up with a commitment to earmark at least some of the additional revenue to encourage the creation of new greener products and services. Such hypothecation is normally avoided by HM Treasury, perhaps indicating the concern that the Government has about raising taxes at this time.

“As pressure from environmentalists and wider society to reduce plastic waste intensifies, it will be interesting to see what the consultation period yields.”
