Campaign to Protect Rural England welcomes the 'momentous step' taken to introduce a deposit return system for drinks containers.
Samantha Harding, litter programme director at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), said:
“This is a momentous step towards a cleaner environment, whether countryside, beach or high street. Deposit return systems are easy to use and recapture valuable materials. There is little doubt the system will prove a triumph in Scotland, and it paves the way for the rest of the UK.
“A deposit system also begins to shift the financial burden of dealing with waste from the public, as council tax payers, to those who produce the packaging. This is long overdue.”
What happens next?
“[Environment Secretary] Michael Gove has said that he wants to introduce a scheme as quickly as possible, and Scottish ministers have now laid down a marker. We just need to make sure that an English scheme is the same as or compatible with the one in Scotland. A drinks container bought in St Ives should be able to be returned in St Andrews.”
