First class to be axed to ease overcrowding on busy trains

Liz Bates

First class carriages on packed trains will be scrapped to create more space for commuters, the Transport Secretary has said.

Chris Grayling told the Telegraph that busy trains would no longer be “segregated” to end the under-occupation of some carriages at peak travel times.

Mr Grayling added that he was “absolutely” committed to the plan, which will remove first class carriages on services over the next few years.

The Transport Secretary also outlined plans for smart ticketing, which will replace paper tickets with an electronic, tap-in system.
