Glastonbury 2017 and Festival Republic champion new initiative to reduce deadly effects of carbon monoxide poisoning from BBQs taken into tents

As we are now in full Festival season, the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group launches the CO Safety at Festivals campaign, highlighting the widespread risk of carbon monoxide poisoning at festivals to politicians and the government.
Melvin Benn, Founder of Festivals Republic and Emily Eavis, co-organiser of Glastonbury Festival, the two largest festival organisers in the world, are championing the launch of an all-party initiative, to raise awareness of the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning from bringing a BBQ inside a tent or canopy, either to keep warm or to carry on cooking.
Melvin Benn, Founder of Festivals Republic said, “Festivals Republic is pleased to be supporting the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group in its campaign to highlight the serious effects of carbon monoxide from BBQs at festivals like ours. While we take as many precautions as we can, many of our festivals have to contend with the great British weather, especially when the heavens open, and our festival goers may well bring their BBQs inside of their tents to keep warm or carry on with their barbequing. We are looking forward to seeing this danger recognised more widely, especially in Parliament.”
On the eve of the opening of Glastonbury 2017, Emily Eavis, co-organiser of Glastonbury Festival said
“The Glastonbury Festival team are really happy to support the APPCOG CO Safety at Festivals campaign. We want all of our festival goers to have an amazing experience but want them to stay safe! By highlighting the dangers of bringing a BBQ into a tent, either to keep warm or to carry on cooking, we hope that people will leave the BBQ outside and have a happy and healthy Glastonbury 2017.”
Barry Sheerman MP, Co-Chair of the APPCOG, said : “The All-Party Carbon Monoxide Group is delighted that the world’s two largest festival organisers are backing our campaign to raise awareness of CO poisoning from lit or cool BBQs in tents. We want everyone at festivals this summer to have a great time and to not be affected by this silent killer, and to raise awareness of this issue to MPs and government who want to protect constituents.”
