Journey to Safety: Combatting Disability Hate Crime on Public Transport

Journey to Safety: Combatting Disability Hate Crime on Public Transport

Venue & Event Details

On Tuesday 13th May, United Response are hosting a drop-in event to discuss the findings of their new “Journey to Safety” report, which explores disability hate crimes on public transport across the country.  The event will take place between 10:00 and 11:30 in the Council Chamber, Surveyor’s House, 12 Great George Street, SW1P 3AD, over the road from Parliament.

Last year, over 11,000 disability hate crimes were reported, yet in 99% of cases involving violence, no one was charged with an offence. This event aims to explore the lived experiences of disabled people facing hate crimes while they navigate public transport, as well as what government and public bodies can do to improve the safety, accessibility and accountability within the public transport and criminal justice systems.

The report explores why over 75.6% of those who have experienced a hate crime on public transport experience a loss in confidence and increased sense of vulnerability, while 13.4% stop using public transport altogether following an incident. Public transport is a vital lifeline for many disabled people, providing access to work, education, healthcare, and social opportunities. Addressing these issues is therefore crucial to ensuring that those living with a disability, either visible or hidden, feel safe and supported when using buses, trains, the underground and other public transport services.

We hope that you will be able to join us as we strive to create a safer, more accessible transport system for those with disabilities.
