The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), is working with leading provider Develop Training to bring a new legionella assessment to employers, an assessment that meet the very high standards of the national Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Working together combines the experience in environmental health and water policy that the CIEH holds with Develop Training’s long experience in delivering legionella training and assessment to support compliance to ACoPL8 (the HSE Code of Practice for legionnaires’ disease, the control of legionella bacteria in water systems).

The CIEH branded assessments are currently exclusive to Develop Training with a common Legionella Awareness unit and two pathways for a Level 2 Award dedicated either to Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers or to Hot and Cold Water Systems. This is an example of how CIEH offers bespoke qualifications to training companies.

Frank Post, CIEH Director of Commercial Services, said: “Legionella training requires specific skills and equipment to deliver, so it is highly beneficial for us to work with reputable providers such as Develop Training.

“The Develop partnership enables CIEH to promote our training courses to key sectors including hospitality, leisure and manufacturing.  Essentially, it extends the ‘golden thread’ of environmental health awareness in a way that is practical and effective.”

Andy Holmes, Head of Audit and Quality Improvement at Develop Training said: “The knowledge and experience of the CIEH team has proved invaluable in developing legionella qualifications that are accredited by them within the QCF framework.  As a leading awarding body they have great experience in accrediting workplace qualifications and our collaboration on the legionella units is hopefully the start of delivering a wider range of their first aid and risk assessment courses”.

“Develop Training has a long history of delivering accredited legionella training.  Employers benefit from employees who are acutely aware of the potential hazard that is the legionella bacteria, where it can replicate and how to put in place relevant control measures.

“Under general health and safety law, employers who manage premises with hot/cold water services and/or wet cooling systems (e.g. cooling towers and evaporative condensers) have to consider the risks from legionella, how it may affect staff or members of the public, and take suitable safety measures.”
