Following the news that the UK Supreme Court has ordered the Government to deliver new plans to cut illegal levels of air pollution in Britain by the end of the year, Howard Price, Lead Policy Officer for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), said:
“We welcome today’s clarification of the UK Government’s obligation to devise an effective air quality strategy and, not least, the demonstration of our national courts’ jurisdiction to enforce that. The judgment will not only have a profound influence in the UK but will resonate throughout the EU.
“Although Defra has been working up a new strategy for some time now, it is not entirely clear when it will be published and only time will show if it will be successful. Crucial to any strategy will be to reinvigorate local authorities to deliver it, while not losing sight of other environmental causes of ill-health including noise, water quality and land contamination.”
