Cloud Gate Theater opens, Taiwan
Cloud Gate Theater has officially opened in Tamsui, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Mott MacDonald project managed construction for the Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation, the umbrella organisation for two renowned Taiwanese contemporary dance companies, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan and Cloud Gate 2.
The seven-storey complex provides a new home for Cloud Gate after its studio was destroyed in a fire in 2008. It includes a 450 seat, fully-equipped proscenium theatre with retractable seating, as well as two 150 seat rehearsal studios which can be used as black-box theatres. It also has an outdoor stage with seating for 1,500 people, storage spaces and administrative offices. In addition to presenting two home-based companies and visiting troupes, it also serves as a production theater for Taiwanese companies to try out their new works.
Mott MacDonald offered technical advice on interfacing, design management and the construction programme and reviewed the design, materials and specification. The consultancy also assisted with tenders and construction management and undertook inspections upon the completion of construction.
Sam Hung, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “We’re proud to have worked on this project throughout its life cycle. Over the last four years, we maintained strong communications between all parties involved to support the efficient completion of the project.”
