Damian Green's speech welcomed, but reform to enable disabled people needed - Scope

Mark Atkinson, chief executive at disability charity Scope, responded to Work and Pensions Secretary Damian Green 's speech, saying:

“The Secretary of State was right to highlight the need to remove barriers that prevent disabled people from moving back to work, and the negative attitudes that hold people back.

“We welcome government action to get more small businesses employing disabled people and look forward to more detail.

“Smaller and medium sized employers can offer flexibility that is crucial to disabled people getting in, staying in, and progressing in work. They are responsible for more than half of all private sector jobs, and it’s vital that they are at the centre of the government’s bold ambition to halve the disability employment gap.

“There are over 12 million disabled people in Britain and they are an essential part of our economy. The government must set out a bold strategy for reform to enable disabled people to contribute fully.”
