Homegrown lamb production and the value it adds to the Halal market has been showcased at a major event by AHDB Beef Lamb.

The organisation highlighted specific cuts with butchery and cooking demonstrations, as well as sharing facts about Halal meat on its stand at the Birmingham Eid Mela on August 16 and 17.

AHDB Beef Lamb distributed its Halal Meat Facts booklet during the event, illustrating the role Halal has to play in supporting the lamb and beef sector in the UK, as well as identifying export opportunities.

Muslims consume around 20 per cent of all sheep meat sold in England, with consumption peaking around the Eid and Ramadan festivals. By 2030, the UK Muslim population is expected to rise to 5.5 million people or 8.2 per cent of the total population.

Dr Phil Hadley, AHDB Beef Lamb head of global supply chain development, said: “The Halal market is growing and adds value to the sheep sector in particular. The Eid Mela event in Birmingham was the ideal platform for us to raise awareness of home grown lamb production, the quality and versatility and how best cook with it using innovative new cuts and recipes.

“Our stand generated considerable interest and enabled us to share recipe ideas developed by AHDB Beef Lamb, as well as gaining valuable feedback for us to draw on for future development work with the sector.”

Further information on Halal recipes to cook with homegrown lamb and beef can be found in the recipes section of www.simplybeefandlamb.co.uk.
