MIMA comment on the Prime Minister's announcement on The Grand Challenge Missions and Clean Growth
The commitment by the Prime Minister to significantly reduce energy use in buildings, by making them more energy efficient and by using smart technology, sends a clear and welcome signal to the market.
The opportunities for jobs, growth and innovation presented by upgrading the country’s building stock are substantial, and the social and environmental benefits are just as large.
Sarah Kostense-Winterton, Executive Director comments:
"Moving forward we, the sector and the Government, will need to work together to flesh out how this welcome announcement fits together with related policies, under the banner of a comprehensive building energy infrastructure programme, to ensure targets for new buildings will take us to zero carbon, to ensure that existing buildings are upgraded in line with the Clean Growth Strategy goals and beyond, and to ensure that innovation drives the delivery of building performance, evaluation and verification where possible. This all must be done without compromising on safety, quality and standards. This is no small challenge, but it is achievable with leadership from Government and the right level of capital investment and planning for the long-term. MIMA stands ready to assist with meeting this challenge.”
