NASUWT calls for political parties to commit to partnership working in Government

The NASUWT has called for political parties to commit to genuine engagement, dialogue and partnership if they are elected on 7 May, in a motion debated today at the Annual Conference of the NASUWT, the largest teachers union in the UK.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“The Coalition Government made a virtue during its time in office out of not engaging with trade unions or the profession and had to be dragged kicking and screaming into any discussions.

“Consequently, its legacy is a teacher recruitment and retention crisis with a record number of teachers considering quitting teaching altogether and the number of those wanting to train as teachers seriously declining. Teaching is now no longer the top career choice for graduates.

“The Coalition’s approach has left chaos and disenchantment behind it and ultimately the losers will be children and young people.

“Sustainable and successful reform cannot be secured without genuine engagement with the workforce.”
