The NASUWT took a delegation of teachers to the 7th Education International World Congress in Ottawa, Canada between 21 and 26 July 2015.

Held every four years, the EI World Congress is the supreme governing authority of Education International, the world’s largest federation of unions, representing thirty-two million education employees in one hundred and seventy countries and territories, across the globe.

Led by Graham Dawson, NASUWT President, the NASUWT delegation moved or supported a number of resolutions on:

The Right to Education for Displaced People, Refugee and Stateless Children;
Opposing TTIP, TISA, CETA, TPP and other similar trade and investment agreements;
Migration, Professional Diversity and Racism;
Support of United Nations Employees’ Rights;
securing LGBTI Rights;
Education and Extremism; and
an urgency resolution on the situation for teacher trade unionists in Iran.

Additionally, Dr Patrick Roach, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT, was successfully re-elected to an open seat on the Executive Board of Education International for a four year term of office.

Commenting on the success of NASUWT’s involvement in the 7th EI World Congress, Dr Patrick Roach, Deputy General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

‘In an exciting and highly relevant agenda, the EI World Congress has once more raised the key issues across the world for teachers and educators, highlighting the importance of teacher trade unions in global education.

I am proud to have been re-elected to the Executive Board and will work tirelessly to continue to promote the work of EI at home and around the world and build support for EI initiatives and projects, advancing the professional status and rights of teachers and educators in order to secure quality education for all.’

Commenting on the success of the NASUWT’s involvement in the 7th EI World Congress and on the re-election of Dr Patrick Roach to the Executive Board, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“Once more the NASUWT has demonstrated the importance of working with teacher trade unions across the globe in order to campaign for democracy, equality, social justice and human rights in education.

“I congratulate Patrick on his re-election to the Executive Board where he will continue to be a strong advocate for the rights of teachers and educators across the world.”
