New Chairs elected to BVA committees
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is delighted to announce new chairs to three of its standing committees
Professor Bill McKelvey has been elected Chair of the Veterinary Policy Group (VPG), Madeleine Campbell takes over the helm of the Ethics and Welfare Group (EWG) and Adele Williams will lead the Overseas Group (OG).
Bill McKelvey’s career has spanned veterinary practice, academia and business. Until early 2012 Bill was Chief Executive Officer and Principal of the Scottish Agricultural College. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and has been awarded an OBE for services to agriculture. Bill is currently vice chairman of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland, a member of the boards of both the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and the Scottish Food Advisory Committee, and a non-executive director of a large livestock farming business in Scotland.
At BVA Bill has been a member of Council and has previously served on the scientific advisory panel for BVA Congress. He has been a member of Veterinary Policy Group since 2011. Bill was a member of the RCVS Governance Review Group and chaired the RCVS Overspend Committee. He is keen to give something back to the profession by further supporting BVA’s work and believes that the development of BVA policy in a structured and measured forum is central to the success of the association.
Madeleine Campbell is the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow in Veterinary Ethics at the Royal Veterinary College. She is a European and a RCVS Recognised Specialist in Equine Reproduction and the sole partner at Hobgoblins Equine Reproduction Centre. Madeleine was the first veterinary surgeon to be awarded a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in Biomedical Ethics, and is using that funding to research the ethics of assisted reproductive techniques in non-human mammals. She also has a research interest in the ethics of competitive animal use. Madeleine holds an MA in Medical Ethics and Law, having graduated with distinction.
A former President of the British Equine Veterinary Association, Madeleine has been a member of the Ethics and Welfare Group since 2010. With public interest in animal welfare ever increasing, Madeleine looks forward to steering the work of the Group in informing policy makers and in informing views within the veterinary profession.
Adele Williams is a European specialist diplomat in equine internal medicine and is heavily involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary clinical skills as well as research into equine disease. She has recently submitted her PhD thesis based on biochemistry of equine recurrent airway obstruction at the University of Manchester and next year will be starting as a lecturer in equine medicine at the University of Surrey’s new School of Veterinary Medicine.
Adele has been involved in overseas charitable projects in Romania, Ukraine and The Gambia, participating in veterinary work and education of veterinarians and local animal handlers to improve animal health and welfare. She has been a member of the Overseas Group since 2010 and looks forward to putting the newly devised strategy for determining the future vision of the Group into action.
