EBLEX will be launching the Herd Management Calendar, a new tool for producers, at the National Beef Association Beef Expo in York on Thursday 21 May 2015.

The online tool will help producers to remember to carry out key tasks at specific times related to calving or service date. Management task reminders are emailed weekly and producers can also add their own tasks to the calendar. An unlimited number of groups can be added to ensure the reminders are timely. And producers can click onto each task for more in-depth information.

Experts will be on the EBLEX stand to take visitors to the show through the new tool and also discuss breeding, health of the herd and grassland management.

A cow, painted to showcase the different primal cuts, will highlight the importance of the end product and selection for slaughter.

“There is something for producers at every stage of the process, from breeding to slaughter. We’ve got an array of tools available and the show will be a great opportunity for producers to have a go with the new herd management calendar,” said Steve Dunkley, EBLEX senior regional manager.

“Visitors to the show can also take advantage of a Records Clinic we’re running. They can discuss their own records or performance figures in more detail with our team of experts. They just need to email brp@ahdb.org.uk to arrange a time.”

A new and unique competition, the Future Beef Farmer Challenge, will also take place at Beef Expo this year to test the skills, knowledge and abilities of teams and individual young beef farmers. They will face four challenges at the show and the EBLEX challenge will look at breeding and genetics. Competitors will also be tested on their knowledge of cattle health, nutrition and cattle selection for slaughter. Teams interested in entering must pre-register by May 7 by contacting the EBLEX Northern Office on 01904 771214.

“The Future Beef Farmer Challenge is designed to identify the forward thinking, younger beef farmers that we as industry organisations can get behind, support and help develop.

“There is a tremendous calibre of young farmers out there and I am sure that the winners of these competitions will be advocates for the industry in the future,” said Steve.
