The National Federation of Builders (NFB) welcomes the Prime Minister’s ambition for a comprehensive trade agreement, calling on the Government to take into account the planks of the Construction Industry Brexit Manifesto published in November 2017.

On 2 March 2018, the Prime Minister delivered a speech setting out the Government’s vision for a future trade relationship with the EU following Brexit.

Theresa May placed particular emphasis on “five tests” that will underpin the UK’s negotiating stance throughout the process to reach an ambitious and inclusive free trade agreement with the EU.

The Prime Minister explained that any future agreement must respect the result of the referendum, endure over the long-term, protect people’s jobs and security, be consistent with the UK’s ambition to be an outward-looking country, and ultimately strengthen the union of the UK’s nations.

Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB, said: “Despite being some time away from a final exit treaty, we are quite pleased by the optimistic tone of the Prime Minister’s speech. Her intervention clarified the benchmarks against which the Government will measure the success of the withdrawal negotiations.

“By detailing some of the existing EU practices and identifying how they can function after Britain leaves the EU, such as regulation, both sides can move toward a pragmatic solution. However, we need greater clarity on how both sides will access each other’s skilled workers, particularly those already working in Britain.”
