NIA welcomes UK nuclear power station life extension plans
The Nuclear Industry Association, the trade body for the civil nuclear sector, has today welcomed the news that EDF Energy has announced plans to extend the life of four of its nuclear stations.
Nuclear power provides 20% of the UK’s low carbon, baseload electricity, giving the UK a homegrown source of clean energy.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive, Nuclear Industry Association, said:
“The plans to extend the life of four of the UK’s nuclear power stations is welcome news for the local, regional and national economy. As well as providing secure, low carbon electricity to millions of UK homes and businesses, lifetime extensions will help safeguard hundreds of skilled jobs in Scotland and the north of England.
“2015 was one of the best years for output for the UK’s nuclear fleet. The investment in keeping stations running helps maintain the UK’s security of supply, and avoids the generation of millions of additional tonnes of CO2.”
