Following the independent evidence review published by Public Health England (PHE) on the use of e-cigarettes, Ian Gray, Principal Policy Officer for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), said:

“PHE’s proposal to publish advice to support organisations develop policies on the use of e-cigarettes in enclosed public places and workplaces is something we particularly welcome.

“In collaboration with Action on Smoking and Health, the CIEH is already supporting local authorities to develop pilot policies which maximise the public health gains by differentiating between prohibiting the use of smoked tobacco products whilst permitting the use of e-cigarettes.

“The vast majority of e-cigarette users are smokers who are trying to stop and ex-smokers who have successfully substituted their tobacco products, which PHE now assures us are far safer for the smokers themselves and pose no known health risks for others in the workplace.”
