Commenting on todays report of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission, Gareth Jenkins, Director of UK Poverty for Save the Children said:

“A child’s success at school depends on their progress in their early years. This report sets the clear challenge to the government that urgent investment is needed in children’s pre-school years if we are to stand any chance of closing the educational attainment gap for the poorest.

But to give children the best start, we need the best nurseries. A good nursery, led by a graduate early years teacher, is one of the best ways to prevent the poorest children from falling behind, ensuring that they arrive at school with the foundations of learning, reading and counting. Yet thousands of nurseries don’t employ a single early years teacher. To meet the challenge set by the Commission, we need action from the government to ensure that, by 2020, every nursery is led by a graduate early years teacher.”
