Scope responds to new PIP quarterly tribunal stats

With one week to go until changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) are enforced, figures today show that more than 17,000 cases for PIP were heard at tribunal in the last quarter. Of these, over 65% of claimants were successful in challenging a decision on their PIP assessment.

Scope is concerned that too many poor decisions are being made, causing anxiety and hardship for many disabled people. Today’s figures show that the PIP assessment is flawed and we know it does not accurately reflect the extra costs disabled people face. Before making any other changes, the government needs to fix what isn’t working.

The unfair new regulations will deny thousands of disabled people the support to meet the extra costs of disability - it unjustly pits people with different conditions against each other.

Time is running out for the government to reverse this decision. We urge the government to put a stop to the new regulations, and instead to reform the assessment process so that disabled people aren’t unfairly penalised.
