Threat to Birmingham engineering plant and 89 jobs condemned by Unite

The threat to the future of a top engineering plant in Birmingham, Wyman-Gordon, with the possible loss of 89 highly skilled jobs was condemned as “short-sighted and wrong” by Unite, the country's largest union, today (Wednesday, 18 September).

The company, which makes gas turbine engine rings, said that it was proposing to move the work to other factories within the group in America and the Czech Republic.

Unite regional officer Tim Parker said:

“This is a short-sighted and wrong move, given the recent strong burst in manufacturing growth in the UK and the increasing high levels of productivity and foreign investment.

“This is a time of great uncertainty and worry for the employees at the Tinsley site and their families, and Unite will be campaigning hard to save these jobs.

“We are due to hold preliminary discussions on Monday (23 September) with Wyman Gordon on its proposed plans for the Redfern Road site.

"We are surprised and extremely concerned by the company's proposed future transfer of manufacturing work from the plant to America and the Czech Republic.

“We aim to convince the company that the highly skilled workers at the Tyseley site are an extremely valuable asset who deserve a decent and secure future at this important UK site.”
