Attracting the next generation of butchers to the profession is a vital part of a forthcoming international butchery competition, according to team captain for Great Britain.
With the Tri-Nations Butchers’ Challenge now just a month away, David Lishman has shared his hopes that the event will inspire a future generation of top-class meat experts.
David, founder and manager of Lishman’s of Ilkley, is captaining the British team for the second year running. The event is being held on home soil for the first time and will take place at the Great Yorkshire Show, on July 10. The team of six UK butchers is taking on counterparts from Australia and New Zealand in a test of skill and invention.
“As well as finding a winning team – who will have bragging rights until the next time – the competition is a chance for youngsters with an interest in the art to see some of the best butchers in the world producing some of their best work,” said David.
“The competitive aspect is the focus for all three teams; we each want to win and hold the title for the year ahead. But this is also an opportunity to share good practice, and for youngsters who want to learn, to learn from the best. ”
Excitement about the competition is growing, with much interest coming through social media channels, and the #Butchery3Nations hashtag generating national support for each of the teams.
Members of the public are welcome to come along and lend support to the GB team (Great Yorkshire show tickets are available from www.greatyorkshireshow.co.uk).
