Left unchecked, the current Universal Credit system will lead to more hardship among the self-employed and force people to abandon their businesses, says IPSE.
Universal Credit is hitting the self-employed hardest of all as its chaotic rollout continues.
By not taking into account the variable income self-employed farmers, photographers and plumbers, Universal Credit unfairly punishes those who choose to work independently. The self-employed can in fact end up £3000 worse off each year under UC compared with an employee earning the same amount.
IPSE will continue to urge the government to change course and reform the system so it supports rather than penalises the self-employed. Left unchecked, the current Universal Credit system will lead to more hardship among the self-employed and force people to abandon their businesses.
