WaterAid responds to Paris climate deal: Hope for the world’s poorest

Following the agreement in Paris of a new accord on climate change please find the following comment from Louise Whiting, senior policy analyst, water security and climate change, WaterAid:

“This agreement represents hope for the world's poorest who are most affected by climate change, through the inclusion of the 1.5 degree Celsius limit on warming, the emphasis on climate resilient development and poverty eradication, and for the first time reference to loss and damage.

“However WaterAid is concerned that water is not a focus. Climate change manifests through water - droughts, floods, extreme weather shocks and rising seas - and securing access to safe water, good sanitation and hygiene is essential for communities trying to cope with and recover from such events. What is needed next is action from all parties to ensure adaptation finance goes where it's most needed, and that the poorest and most vulnerable are made priority.”
