We must not replace one broken system with another one - Alzheimer’s Society

Sally Copley, Director of Policy, Campaigns and Partnerships, at Alzheimer’s Society has responded to the Care Minister.

More than half of the people cared for under Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in England are living with dementia, so any changes to the system must have their needs at the heart.

We agree with the Government that the current system is overly complex, too bureaucratic and offers weak protection of people with dementia’s rights. But we must not replace one broken system with another one.

As the Bill goes through the Commons, major concerns must be addressed by the Government about the proposal for care home managers to be in charge of asking residents about the care they receive.  Under the new proposals people with dementia find themselves in a worrying situation, unable to comment on the quality of their care. There must be an independent person carrying out these consultations – to ensure the liberty and rights of people with dementia, as enshrined in the Dementia Statements we have developed with them, are properly safeguarded.
