Will regeneration price existing tenants out of their own homes?
The House Builders Association (HBA) welcomes the governments action to regenerate run-down estates.
The prime minister announced the allocation of £140 million to regenerate some of the most run-down housing estates across the country.
Under this project, derelict housing estates throughout the United Kingdom will be gradually replaced with safer and more attractive homes. The Government is set to work alongside 100 housing estates to transform or completely replace, in the most serious cases, run-down estates with modern high-quality homes. The fund will be supervised by an estate regeneration advisory panel, which will be chaired by former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Heseltine.
The House Builders Association (HBA) welcomes the government’s action to regenerate these run-down estates, hoping that this regeneration programme will not lead to current tenants being priced out of their homes. Rico Wojtulewicz, policy advisor for the HBA, said: “We welcome the prime minister’s decision to tackle old housing estates, some of which lie in dilapidated conditions and have long been neglected. However, the HBA remains concerned about the possibility that current tenants in housing estates, which may be replaced, will be priced out of their homes. If planned properly, this programme could potentially bring numerous benefits to local communities. We look forward to working with the Government on the issue.”
