Over 50 emissions reduction technologies identified in latest technology roadmap from NZTC and NSTA
The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), in partnership with the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), has launched a new resource showcasing deployable and cutting-edge emissions reduction technologies, including low carbon alternative fuels, efficient flare combustion and advanced digital solutions.
The latest technology roadmap identifies over 50 adoptable solutions that address emissions reduction opportunities across power generation, flaring and venting, and fugitive emissions. It provides a structured approach to deploying these technologies, identifying operational modifications and process improvements that can support the industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
Designed to support operators in the development and implementation of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction Action Plans for individual assets, the roadmap aligns with the NSTA’s OGA plan, which makes it clear that for domestic production to continue, it must get progressively cleaner. The sector has already made significant progress, delivering a 28% reduction in its production emissions between 2018 and 2023. However, further action is needed to ensure industry meets and surpasses key targets, including a 50% reduction by 2030 and 90% by 2040, on the pathway to net zero by 2050.
The roadmap – commissioned by the Technology Leadership Board (TLB), and launched at a TLB technology showcase event in Aberdeen – was developed through extensive industry consultation to evaluate current approaches and identify gaps in technology and investment. The 2025 roadmap builds on the partnership’s previous edition, launched last year, which provided a comprehensive overview of technologies for measuring and monitoring GHG emissions.
Dushyant Sharma, Strategy Lead at bp & Lead for the TLB’s North Sea Transition workstream, said:
“This Emission Reduction Technology Roadmap documents available solutions and highlights new ones in development. Sharing this knowledge will enable the industry to advance technology opportunities for energy transition and help remove barriers to early uptake.”
Niki Chambers, Head of Technology Solutions at NZTC, said:
“Our collaboration with the NSTA has created a vital resource for the energy industry, offering operators a clear view of necessary emissions reductions and the latest technologies to achieve them.
“By leveraging NZTC’s extensive network, we’ve engaged a broad range of developers and innovators to make this possible, empowering operators to take meaningful steps in advancing their emissions reduction plans and accelerating the decarbonisation of operations.”
Ernie Lamza, Technology Manager, North Sea Transition Authority, said:
“Operators and suppliers working together on emissions reductions is crucial to delivering on the industry’s net zero target – and this important roadmap highlights some great examples of collaboration leading to positive results.
“I am thrilled to see it launched at a technology showcase event which brings together key contributors of this piece of work.
“Getting the right people in the same room is often the best way to share experience and knowledge, build on existing capabilities and strike up new opportunities to collaborate.”
