Boris Johnson 'to hand peerages to Brexiteers' to rebalance pro-Remain House of Lords
1 min read
Boris Johnson is to hand peerages to prominent Brexit supporters, it has been claimed.
The move is aimed at watering down the influence of Remain supporters in the House of Lords.
Theresa May's government suffered a series of defeats on Brexit in the upper chamber, where a majority of members oppose the UK leaving the European Union.
It is understood that Mr Johnson wants to reward "unsung heroes" of the 2016 referendum campaign, including business leaders and politicians, by making them Lords.
He has sent a list of names to Buckingham Palace so they can be included in Mrs May's resignations honours list, which is set to be published next month.
The former Prime Minister is expected to ennoble former senior figures in her government, including foher Downing Street chief of staff Gavin Barwell, and Robbie Gibb, her director of communications.
Mrs May had previously spoken in favour of reducing the size of the House of Lords, which is one of the largest legislatures in the world.
