Call for home nation football clubs to cut down on single-use plastics

Football leagues in the home nations should "show leadership" and crack down on single-use plastics at games, a top MP has said.
Chair of the Environmental Audit Committee Mary Creagh wrote to the leagues in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to make the appeal.
She urged them to follow in the footsteps of the English Premier League, which plans to phase out single-use plastics in its operations and supply chains over the next two years.
The English Football League alone has 72 member clubs and beats all other professional clubs in European football in size.
Ms Creagh called on club chairs to “mobilise the power of support” in cracking down on single-use plastic cups, bottles, bags, stirrers, trays and cutlery.
The Labour MP said: "Plastic litter ruins our streets, chokes our seas and endangers wildlife… We all need to do our bit to tackle the scourge of plastic pollution.
"There is a huge opportunity for sports organisations to reduce the use of throwaway plastic at matches and encourage fans to reduce, reuse and recycle.
“I want the UK's football leagues to show leadership on this issue."
