A Conservative MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual offences that took place over a period of seven years.

A Metropolitan Police statement said: "A man was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in a public office."

A statement from the government Whips office said: "The Chief Whip has asked that the MP concerned does not attend the Parliamentary Estate while an investigation is ongoing. Until the conclusion of the investigation we will not be commenting further."

The identity of the arrested MP will not be confirmed by the Conservative whips office in order to protect the privacy of victims.

A decision on whether the MP will have the whip suspended is set to be reviewed once the Metropolitan Police investigation has been concluded.

According to The Sun, the serving MP was arrested in relation to alleged incidents that took place between 2002 and 2009 in London.

The arrest comes as the Conservative party faces two by-elections next month.

Imran Ahmad Khan resigned as the Conservative MP for Wakefield after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy at a party in 2008.

Neil Parish resigned as the Conservative MP for Tiverton and Honiton after he was found to have watched pornography in the Commons chamber.
