The government has defeated a Commons attempt by Labour to force through a new law banning fracking by 326 to 230 despite a rebellion by Conservative MPs.
Conservative whips – MPs in charge of party discipline – had warned they considered the vote a confidence motion for the government, and said any MPs who failed to support the government would face suspension. A total of 33 Conservative MPs were recorded as not having supported the government.
While no Conservative MPs voted with Labour, a number had indicated earlier in the day that they would not support the government, such as former energy minister Chris Skidmore.
There may have been MPs paired in the votes to account for MPs on the opposing side who could not vote for legitimate reasons, including Deputy Labour Leader Angela Rayner, who said that she had been paired in order to attend the TUC annual conference in Brighton.
Following the release of the voting data, there were claims from some MPs that they did not believe they should be on the list of those who did not back the government, as a chaotic night unfolded in Westminster. Liz Truss appeared on the original list but was later removed. According to The Guardian, Truss did vote but forgot to swipe her pass, meaning it was not recorded.
