FMB responds to Chartered Institute of Housing report

Federation of Master Builders

1 min read

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders responds to the Chartered Institute for Housing report which shows that 95p of every £1 in Government housing cash goes on benefits, not new homes.

The Government must target more of its spending on building new homes because in the long run, this is the only solution which will lift the UK out of the housing crisis. Investing more in house building will in turn reduce the housing benefit bill of the future. We should strive to deliver an increase in output for housing of all types and tenures, and this should include a new programme of council house building. To enable this, the Government should allow local authorities to borrow to build new homes as they did successfully in the past.
