Former cabinet minister Michael Gove has been awarded a peerage as part of the former prime minister Rishi Sunak's resignation honours and peerages lists.

Gove — who was a key ally of Sunak — stood down as a Tory MP last year after 20 years in the Commons. During his time in Parliament, Gove served as education secretary, levelling up secretary, justice secretary and chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He is currently the editor of the Spectator.

The former levelling up secretary was sacked from Boris Johnson's government in 2022 after urging him to resign.

Sunak's resignation honours and peerage list, which contains 36 names, also awarded a seat in the House of Lords to the former secretary of state for transport Mark Harper and the former chief whip of the House of Commons Simon Hart.

Sunak resigned as leader of the Conservative party after losing the general election in 2024.

Sir Alister Jack, who was secretary of state for Scotland under Sunak and Stephen Massey, former Chief Executive Officer of the Conservative Party, were also awarded peerages, alongside former Attorney General Victoria Prentis and former head of the No 10 Policy Unit Eleanor Shawcross.

Among those awarded a knighthood are the Conservative MPs James Cleverley, Jeremy Hunt, Andrew Mitchell and Mel Stride.

Grant Shapps, the former defence secretary who lost his seat at the July 2024 election, was also awarded a knighthood, alongside the England cricketer James Anderson.

The former Conservative MP Theresa Villiers was awarded a Damehood.

Those awarded a CBE include the former director of communications at No 10 Downing Street Nerissa Chesterfield and Cassian Horowitz, former special advisor.
