GMB attacks Government's 'flawed' industrial strategy as construction plummets

Theresa May looks like a rabbit in the headlines as the economy tanks around her.

GMB, the union for construction workers, has attacked the Government's flawed industrial strategy as construction plummets.

The latest ONS figure show construction output fell by 1.3% over the last three months, helping to drive a 0.6% drop in overall manufacturing production.

The figures also show private housebuilding and private industrial construction work were in fact up - but were outweighed by big contraction in public housing and publicly funded construction projects.

Jude Brimble, GMB National Secretary, said:

“The disappointing outlook for the UK’s construction industry once again shows this Conservative Government has no coherent industrial strategy and is falling asleep at the wheel.

“With Brexit looming, we need to be promoting growth by investing in public infrastructure, creating good jobs and wealth for the economy.

“Instead we see Theresa May looking increasingly like a rabbit in the headlines as the economy tanks around her."
