‘I can’t even imagine negotiating with Corbyn’ - US Commerce Secretary swipes at Labour leader
1 min read
The US Commerce Secretary has mocked Jeremy Corbyn by saying he “can’t even imagine” what it would be like to negotiate with a government headed up by the Labour leader.
Wilbur Ross met International Trade Secretary Liam Fox in Washington yesterday to discuss mutual investment opportunities.
The UK Government has made a deal with the US one of its main targets for post-Brexit trade deals.
Mr Ross said those discussions had “got off to a good start” and would have a “happy finish”.
But he gave a cool response when asked what it would be like to work with Mr Corbyn, whose Labour party made significant gains in the recent general election.
“I can’t even imagine what those negotiations would be like,” he replied.
Speaking to CNBC separately, Dr Fox trumpeted the UK’s “stability and security” as one of the reasons for investors to choose Britain.
“The point that you make about why do people want to invest in the United States is the same as why do people want to invest in the United Kingdom,” he said.
“We have a rule of law that provides stability and security for investment. We have low regulation low taxation economies. We have a good skills base, a cutting edge research base. These are the reasons that will attract investment to us in the future.”
