Jeremy Corbyn pays tribute to 'ledge' Arsene Wenger after Arsenal boss stands down

2 min read

Jeremy Corbyn has thanked Arsene Wenger after the Arsenal manager announced plans to quit following 22 years at the helm.

The Labour leader, who is both a Gunners fan and the MP for Islington North where the club play their matches, said the revelation was a “huge piece of news”.

Mr Corbyn told the Islington Gazette that the Frenchman ranked “number one” among the North London team’s legendary figures.

“Thank you Arsene, for everything you’ve done for our club and for our community,” he told the paper.

“You took the club to a higher plane. Your kindness to so many people in Islington has been inspirational. It has been a pleasure.

“I’ve always been impressed by his courtesy, his incredible grasp of languages and his ability to relate to people at all levels.”

When asked about the coach's status among the club’s key figures, he added: “He’s number one. Absolutely. He’s the ledge. He’s been manager for an unprecedented long time.”

In a separate statement on his Facebook page, the Labour leader said Mr Wenger had been an “inspiration” for young people in the local community.

He added: “Thank you for all the achievements, over such a long period, for the club I love. Three Premier League titles, the unbeaten season, a record breaking seven FA Cups and revolutionising the English game.

“Thank you for the beautiful football and wonderful memories.

“And thank you for the example you have set in standing up to abuse and criticism, proving you are stronger than all your critics.

“Merci beaucoup, Monsieur Wenger, pour votre bon travail.”
