Jeremy Corbyn takes lead over Theresa May on who would make best PM

1 min read

Voters now believe that Jeremy Corbyn would make a better Prime Minister than Theresa May, according to a new poll.

The YouGov survey for The Times found that 35% of British adults believe the Labour leader should be in Number 10, compared to 34% who back Mrs May.

It marks a remarkable turnaround since mid-April, when the Conservative leader called the general election.

At that time, she enjoyed a 39-point lead over Mr Corbyn on who would make the best Prime Minister. But that lead has been whittled away as a result of the Tories's disastrous election campaign, which saw them lose their Commons majority.

Other polls have also suggested that Labour is now ahead of the Conservatives as the Government continues its attempts to form a pact with the DUP.

However, the YouGov poll also found that 34% of voters trust the Tories to handle the Brexit negotiations, compared to just 20% who back Labour.

It also found that the UK remains evenly split over whether leaving the EU was the right decision, with 44% saying it was and 45% saying it was not.

And 58% believe establishing good trading links with the EU should be the priority in the Brexit negotiations, compared with 42% who think it should be gaining complete control over the UK's borders.
