MP Submits Letter Of No Confidence In Boris Johnson Over “Mistruths” Overshadowing Government

Pressure is mounting on Boris Johnson as yet more MPs reveal they have submitted letters of no confidence in his leadership.

The Prime Minister has faced heavy criticism this week over his response to the update from Sue Gray on the investigation into Downing Street parties.

MPs from both sides of the House have also raised concerns after Johnson falsely claimed Starmer, who formerly served as director of public prosecutions, was responsible for failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile.

Anthony Mangnall and Gary Streeter have become the latest Tory MPs to publicly announce he has submitted a letter to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee.

"Standards in public life matter. At this time I can no longer support the PM," Magnall wrote on Twitter.

“His actions and mistruths are overshadowing the extraordinary work of so many excellent ministers and colleagues. I have submitted a letter of no confidence.”

Writing on his website, Streeter said that he "cannot reconcile the pain and sacrifice of the vast majority of the British Public during lockdown with the attitude and activities of those working in Downing Street".

"I have not come to this decision lightly," the MP said.

"It is not my intention to say any more about this matter," he added.

"I will focus on serving the residents of South West Devon."

Ex-minister and senior backbencher Tobias Ellwood also confirmed on Wednesday that he would be submitting a letter against the PM, and called on Johnson to resign before the 54 letters needed to trigger a no confidence vote are reached.

Only a handful of MPs have publicly declared they are submitting letters to Sir Graham, including Mangnall, Ellwood, Andrew Bridgen, Sir Roger Gale, Peter Aldous and Scottish Tory leader, Douglas Ross.

Several other senior Tory MPs — including Andrew Mitchell, William Wragg, David Davis and Caroline Nokes — have also called on the prime minister to resign, but have not stated whether they will be submitting letters.

The influential One Nation group of backbench Tories has also warned Johnson it plans to move against him if he cannot get a grip on the party, according to The Times.

“The basic decencies are something we want to see in politics," a senior member of the group of centrist MPs said.

“If Graham [Brady] continues to receive this steady trickle of letters he might suddenly find that his cup overflows rather unexpectedly.”
