Nadine Dorries will replace Oliver Dowden after she was handed a major promotion to the cabinet role.
Boris Johnson has appointed the former junior health minister to the role as part of a major cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday afternoon.
She will replace Oliver Dowden who has been moved to take over as chair of the Conservative Party and a minister at the Cabinet Office.
Dorries, a best-selling author, has served as MP for Mid Bedfordshire since 2005 having previously worked as a nurse in Warrington.
She was given the role as minister for mental health, suicide prevention and patient safety in May 2020 have previously served as parliamentart under-secretary of state at the department of health and social care since July 2019.
Dorries, a close ally of Boris Johnson, lost the Conservative Party whip in late 2012 for a period of seven months after she appeared on reality TV programme I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here but had failed to inform party bosses.
