Number 10 lobby briefing on French border security cash

1 min read

Here is a summary of this morning's briefing for lobby journalists by a spokesman for the Prime Minister.

FRENCH BORDER SECURITY

On the Government agreeing to pay £45m to improve security at the French border, the spokesman said:

"This is about investing and enhancing the security of the UK border, which is clearly something which is beneficial to the people of the UK. We have always been clear that where we can make security improvements we have done so.

"Just as we would invest in our borders around the UK, it's right that we will constantly monitor our border controls in France and Belgium to ensure they are as secure as possible.

"It's important to remember why we have this agreement in place. It has had tangible benefits; in 2016 we had 56,000 attempts by clandestines to cross the Channel were stopped at juxtaposed controls."
