Plaid Cymru has suspended MP Jonathan Edwards after he was arrested on suspicion of assault.

The Welsh party confirmed they had withdrawn the whip from Jonathan Edwards after he was arrested earlier this week.

It means the Carmathen East and Dinefwr MP will have to sit as an independent in the Commons until police complete their inquiries.

Mr Edwards, who was detained by officers on Wednesday, has now been released on bail.

In a statement on Saturday, the party confirmed the 44-year-old MP had been suspended following the incident and was "complying fully" with the police investigation.

"Jonathan Edwards MP was arrested following a report of an incident," they said.

"The party whip has been withdrawn pending the conclusion of a police investigation.

"Mr Edwards has accepted this course of action and is complying fully with the police enquiries.

"It would be inappropriate for the party to comment further at this time."

A spokesperson for the Dyfed-Powys Police force, added: "A 44-year-old man from Ammanford was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of assault.

"He has been released on bail. We cannot confirm names or any further details at this stage."
