Rebel Tories to tell Prime Minister he has lost their trust

1 min read

Rebel Conservative MPs are set to tell Boris Johnson he has lost their trust in a face-to-face meeting next week.

A group of MPs led by former Chancellor Phillip Hammond will meet the Prime Minister on Monday. It understood that former Justice Secretary David Gauke will attend, as will former Attorney General Dominic Grieve. They are also going to try and force through legislation delaying Brexit in a bid to stop Britain leaving the EU without a deal.

The group initially tried to give the new Prime Minister space to negotiate a new deal with the EU. However, one Tory MP told The Times that now “the message will be that he has lost our trust. We want him to get a deal but nobody believes him anymore. We are worried that the plan is simply no deal and nothing but no deal.”

The Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, hit out at rebels in his party: “We fought a general election in 2015 with a clear commitment to deliver Britain’s exit from the European Union, he said. "Britain voted to exit from the European Union — we are going to deliver that and we must deliver that.”
