Sir Michael Fallon confirms more UK troops to be sent to Afghanistan

Sir Michael Fallon has said 85 more British troops will be sent to Afghanistan in training capacities.

There are already 500 UK service personnel in the country to assist local forces in their fight against terror.

“Keeping the country from becoming a haven for terrorists helps to keep our streets safe,” the Defence Secretary said.

"That's why we're stepping up our support to the government of Afghanistan and its defence forces, helping them to expand security and develop their armed forces."

The announcement came ahead of a Nato summit, and Mr Fallon also said the battle against so-called Islamic State was reaching its “end game” as they came under more pressure in their stronghold of Mosul.

The RAF has hit over 700 targets in the city as part of the US-led coalition’s efforts to support the Iraqi army and IS has also lost ground in Syria’s Raqqa.
